I would add:&lt;br&gt;a) If you good equity in your home, try to get a line of credit; you might be able to get when you are employed, but not wheh you are out. at less than 4%, you can take care of lot of expenses before you dip into your 401K. I was in that situation in 2003.&lt;br&gt;b) Reduce your mortgage payment by refinancing to a lower rate.
